You know, Gainax might have a thing for making him a catboy in their Newtype images and spinoffs but I don't think that's quite what they were thinking of...

Clearly, Rei's pissed he broke into her "room". :P

It's the shotakon fetishists' fault.

Well, also, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto originally drew me this way, even though my father is Gendou Ikari, who is like two meters tall, and at the age of fourteen I ought to loom over Misato and Ritsuko instead of the reverse.

Children born after Second Impact where so malnourished for the first few years of their lives that they didn't quite grow properly until they started hitting their teens.

Shinji's from a prominent family so he doesn't have that excuse. Also from what Asuka implies it was Misato's generation that suffered worst.

It's called milking popularity to death.
And S&40k was never good; mostly because of the 40k, but partly because it's all memes, all the time.

It never seemed that way at first. It used to be fun. But yes... memes killed it, jarring you out of the narrative.

Poor thing was Troper'd to death
>> Name Anonymous 10/07/13(Tue)23:30 No.22980
Tvtropes is killing fanfiction. Tropers don't seem to understand that tropes are useful tools for analysis of fiction, but terrible for writing it.
And I still stand by my statement: 40k alone is just barely tolerable, but adding it to anything instantly makes it worse.
>> Name Anonymous 10/07/14(Wed)00:32 No.22981
40k was great when it still had it's tongue in its cheek. IT started as a parody of all those Grim and Dark far future settings... and it parodied the lot of 'em by turning them up to damn near eleven. It's now become what it used to parody.

SaW40k was much the same... so gleefully over the top at first, but still commonsensical. Then it just sort of went away with itself madly.

Funnily, this happened about the time it got it's own Tropes page, and it started to become really popular.

Well shit.. I know the tropes I'm using.. I know the ones I'm subverting... I don't need some bloody reviewer asking me if I'm going to subvert play straight or justify random trope entry...

Also, TvTropes is where I found Drunkards Walk... which is fucking awesome.

Anyway, rant rant rabble rabble rabble rabble... back to posting pics.

>> Name Anonymous 10/07/14(Wed)07:25 No.22985
40k had its tongue firmly in cheek... in the eighties. Up through Rogue Trader it was good, silly, badwrongfun. Then the fanboys took over, and it got serious, and as a result, it got stupid.
As for tropes, you really shouldn't need to know what tropes you're using. I know from personal experience that the moment I start thinking about writing in terms of tropes is the moment I stop thinking about it in terms of the characters or the plot. When you start writing like that, you start relying on the tropes alone to carry the story, when they never, ever should.
>> Name Anonymous 10/07/14(Wed)08:06 No.22986
>>22985

That wasn't what I meant. I'm aware of their existence within the story, but I'm not doing the story by tropes. It becomes obvious when they start namechecking tropes.

Once or twice may be forgivable... some trope titles explain the concept within quite well in a very succinct manner (Like Arsepull, for one). But overdoing sucks.

Getting a review in tropespeak however is always annoying. Especially when they get it wrong.
>> Name Anonymous 10/07/14(Wed)13:51 No.22987
A review in tropespeak is like a tiny dog yapping away at your feet for attention and affirmation. I've done it before, and felt dirty ever after.
It's not even a matter of whether they get it right or wrong, it's the fact that they give up actual analysis in favor of simplified abstractions and buzzwords while going "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! WE BOTH GO TO THE SAME SITE (as 20 million other people)!"
>> Name Anonymous 10/07/14(Wed)21:32 No.22989
>>22987

Yeah. Taking trope titles and actually jumping off from them is kinda fun, however. I do find them to be a good source of inspiration. Nightmare Fuel gets mutated in "Petrol on the nightmare bonfire"

But not even bothering to make the effort to do that... you sound like the fanfic equivelant of David Brent... spouting corporate buzzwords to sound like they know what they're doing with no real comprehension of the meaning behind them.
